EDGE Academy Workshop:

Cultural Bias and Social Identity in the AI Era

4 weeks
Overview:
This workshop addresses how cultural biases around gender, race, age, and other social identities are amplified through AI platforms and digital communication tools. As organizations increasingly rely on AI for hiring, performance evaluation, content creation, and customer interaction, understanding and mitigating bias becomes critical.
Research reveals that AI systems often perpetuate existing societal biases, affecting everything from resume screening algorithms to language translation tools. These biases can disproportionately impact employees and customers from marginalized communities, creating barriers to advancement and authentic engagement.

This experiential workshop helps participants recognize how AI tools may reinforce cultural stereotypes, identify when automated systems disadvantage specific groups, and develop strategies to audit and improve both human and AI-generated communications.
Participants gain practical skills for evaluating AI-assisted content for bias, creating inclusive prompts and processes, and building organizational practices that leverage technology while protecting dignity and equity for all social identities.
Workshop
Objectives
By the end of the workshop, the participants will be able to:
1.
Identify cultural biases in AI systems and digital platforms that shape how gender, race, age, and other social identities are perceived and treated in workplace and customer interactions.
2.
Revise bias amplification in AI-assisted HR processes, including hiring, performance evaluation, content creation, and feedback processes.
3.
Audit AI-generated communications using practical assessment tools to detect stereotypes and discriminatory language patterns.
4.
Create inclusive AI prompts and processes that minimize bias while maintaining effectiveness across diverse user groups.
5.
Develop organizational strategies to evaluate and improve both human and AI-generated content for equity and inclusion.
6.
Build systematic practices that leverage AI technology while protecting dignity and advancing equity for all social identities.

Why Cultural Bias &
Social Identity Matter
AI systems embedded in hiring, performance evaluation, and customer service are amplifying existing societal biases at scale, systematically disadvantaging women, people of color, and other marginalized groups. When AI resume screening favors male-coded language or performance algorithms reflect historical promotion patterns, these tools codify discrimination rather than eliminate it.
Organizations using biased AI systems face significant legal, financial, and reputational risks while missing opportunities to serve diverse customers and access top talent. This workshop provides practical skills to identify AI bias, create inclusive technology processes, and build safeguards that ensure AI amplifies human potential rather than perpetuating inequities making this both an ethical imperative and essential business strategy.
Workshop Components
Spotting bias triggers in AI-generated hiring communications that exclude diverse candidates
Testing digital platforms for discriminatory patterns in user experience and engagement
Auditing automated content for language that reinforces cultural stereotypes and social barriers
Building bias checkpoints into organizational AI workflows and approval processes

Creating inclusive AI prompts that produce equitable messaging across all identity groups
